OC Plans Huge Fourth of July Bashes
Ocean City plans big Fourth of July bashes at both ends of town.
Fireworks will light up the sky over the ocean and the bay, bathing the waters in a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors. Bands will play patriotic songs or croon country. Comedians will crack you up, magicians will wow you and dancers done up in red, white and blue will dazzle you.
Way downtown, where the Boardwalk barkers go non-stop and the sweet summer scents of Thrasher’s French Fries and cotton candy float on the salty breeze, you can bring a beach chair or spread your blanket on OC’s widest stretch of beach and celebrate
GETTING THERE Come early, and spare yourself the traffic-clogged roads and jammed parking lots by taking the bus. Parking is extremely limited at both north and south fireworks locations. Bus service is $2 a day and runs round-the-clock. The West Ocean City Park and Ride on Route 50 just west of the bridge offers free parking and $1 shuttle service. For more information, call the Recreation and Parks Department at 410-250-0125 or 1-800-OC-OCEAN. | a Fourth of July you won’t forget anytime soon.
On the North Division Street beach, the United States Navy Cruisers Band will perform at 7 p.m., followed by a patriotic concert by the United States Navy Band and the Sea Chanters from Washington D.C. Fireworks will fill the sky over the ocean beginning at 9:30.
Uptown, at the Jamboree at Northside Park on 127th Street, the celebration starts at 5 p.m. and continues even after the last stream of fire streaks across the sky and sinks into the bay. (Tip: Arrive early to claim the best location to see the fireworks.)
This year, the country act Georgia Lea and Stone Cold Country and the Eastern Shore's own Randy Lee Ashcraft and the Salt Water Cowboys will perform at the park.
Jamboree celebrates in ways almost as timeless as the holiday itself, with tug-of-war, sack races, pie-eating contests and 25 cent carnival games.
Kids can ride on a mini train, jump up and down inside the moon bounce or take in a challenging soccer shootout. Their parents might want to hunt for bargains from arts-and-crafts vendors.
You can feast on Italian sausages, cheese steaks, burgers and hotdogs off the grill and sip lemonade. For dessert, savor some or funnel cake.
